Hertfordshire Society of Referees (HSRFUR) provides match officials for senior rugby union matches across the county. With over 100 active members, we are also able to support many youth fixtures at clubs and schools. Every year we officiate over a thousand matches and are constantly looking for referees to join us.

To referee for HSRFUR you will need to have completed an England Rugby refereeing qualification. If you are new to refereeing, you can book onto an England Rugby Referee Award course, via their website here. If you have already qualified as a referee we will need a copy of your qualification – either a certificate or a copy (photo/scan) of your competency sign off.

We will do our best to look after your development at a rate that is best suited to you and your abilities. If you don’t feel ready to complete a refereeing qualification, you are welcome to attend one of our monthly meetings at the Sports Village at the University of Hertfordshire. These take place every second Thursday of the month, start at 7.30pm and are free of charge. More info on these sessions can be found on the Events page.

Membership of the Society is open to anyone willing to take regular appointment to matches through the Society. The Society membership fee is £20.00 per season; new members are required to pay this once their application is successful. Potential new members should email Peter Smith, our Membership Manager on membership@hertsrefs.co.uk. Once you have joined us, you will be set up on our online administration tool, Who’s the Ref. Appointments to games are made by the Appointments Team based on your availability, which should be updated on Who’s the Ref. For your first match, we will have a Society Match Official Developer to support you on the day and help establish an appropriate level for you to referee at. After acceptably completing 5 games, you will be admitted to full membership and formally presented with Society referee kit.

The Society provides Training and Development through monthly meetings, weekly fitness sessions and referee coaching through our network of Match Official Developers. New Referees Meetings are held monthly to support those new to officiating. As you gain more experience and are subject to reviews from our Developers, your grading level is reviewed and updated.

Referees are entitled to claim their travelling expenses to and from Society appointments using an electronic form via WTR. It is suggested that claims should be made on a quarterly or regular basis; you should provide the Treasurer with your bank account details so these expenses can be paid directly to your account.
